The Boomerang Client: Why the Best Talent Isn't Always Looking for a Job
There’s a pattern we’ve seen time and time again.
A client comes to us with a difficult vacancy. We discuss the role, the market, the type of person they need and the challenges involved in finding them.
We deliver.
The client is happy. The candidate is happy. Everyone agrees that the process worked well.
Then, some time later, the client decides to try recruitment themselves.
And why wouldn’t they?
They advertise the role. They post it on LinkedIn. Perhaps they use one or two of the major job boards. Applications start to arrive.
But the results aren't quite the same.
Eventually, we get the call:
“Can you help us with this one?”
We call these our boomerang clients.
And there’s an important lesson behind why they come back.
The difference between advertising for talent and actively finding it
Traditional job advertising relies on one fundamental assumption:
The person you want is actively looking for a new job.
Sometimes they are.
But when you're recruiting for specialist, technical or hard-to-find positions, that can significantly reduce the available talent pool.
The person who would be perfect for your role may already have a good job.
They may be happy where they are.
They may not be checking job boards.
They may not have updated their CV for five years.
They may not even be considering a move.
But that doesn't mean they wouldn't be interested in the right opportunity.
This is where our approach is different.
We don't wait for the right candidate to find the advert
At Hyreus, we take a proactive approach to specialist recruitment.
Rather than simply advertising a vacancy and waiting for applications, we actively identify and approach people who have the experience, technical capability and background our clients are looking for.
We search our networks.
We research the market.
We identify relevant professionals.
We make direct approaches.
We have conversations.
And, importantly, we take the time to understand why someone might consider moving.
This is the world of passive candidate recruitment.
Passive candidates are often the people you aren't reaching
A passive candidate isn't necessarily someone who is desperate to leave their current employer.
Quite the opposite.
They may be successful in their current position. They may have worked for the same organisation for years. They may be well regarded, well paid and completely comfortable.
But the right opportunity can change their mind.
Perhaps it's a bigger project.
A better career opportunity.
A different location.
More responsibility.
A better cultural fit.
A new challenge.
Or simply an approach that makes them think:
“I'd never considered moving before, but tell me more.”
That conversation is unlikely to happen if you're relying solely on applications to a job advert.
Advertising still has a place
We're not suggesting that job advertising doesn't work.
It absolutely does.
For some roles, advertising can generate an excellent response and attract candidates who are actively looking for their next opportunity.
But advertising should be one part of a recruitment strategy — not necessarily the entire strategy.
For specialist and hard-to-fill positions, relying exclusively on active applicants can mean missing a significant part of the market.
The question isn't:
“Who is applying for this job?”
It's:
“Who could do this job exceptionally well?”
Those are two very different questions.
Why our clients come back
Our boomerang clients aren't coming back because they don't know how to advertise a vacancy.
They're coming back because they've discovered that finding the right person is very different from finding someone who has applied.
When we take on a difficult assignment, our objective isn't to generate the biggest pile of CVs.
It's to identify the right people.
That means understanding the role properly, mapping the available talent, approaching suitable candidates directly, assessing their motivations and presenting clients with people who genuinely fit the brief.
Sometimes that means contacting dozens of people before finding the right individual.
Sometimes it means having conversations outside traditional working hours.
Sometimes it means approaching someone who wasn't looking at all.
That's the work that happens behind the scenes.
The real value of a recruitment partner
The best recruitment partnerships aren't built around simply posting vacancies.
They're built around market knowledge, networks, relationships and persistence.
A good recruiter should be able to tell you:
Where the talent you're looking for is likely to be found
Who is already working in comparable roles
What will attract them to a move
What salary and package expectations look like
Which skills are genuinely scarce
Why candidates are rejecting opportunities
And, perhaps most importantly, who isn't looking at your advert
That's where specialist recruitment can add real value.
And that's why our clients sometimes boomerang
We don't mind when a client decides to try advertising first.
We understand.
In fact, sometimes they'll find exactly who they're looking for.
But when the advert has run, the applications have been reviewed, the interviews have taken place and the right person still hasn't appeared, we're usually still here.
Ready to start looking beyond the people who are actively looking.
Because the best candidate for your vacancy might not be searching for their next job.
They might need you to find them.
That's where Hyreus comes in.
We don't just wait for talent to apply. We go looking for it.
