Hyreus are currently recruiting for an Engineering Manager (Design) for our client's major infrastructure and civil engineering project team. This is a key technical leadership role responsible for managing the design process from inception through delivery, ensuring consultant outputs, technical compliance, programme adherence, and effective stakeholder engagement throughout the project lifecycle. The successful candidate will act as the technical lead for the Hydro Scheme project and provide oversight of all design-related activities.
Responsibilities

  • Manage design consultants and coordinate the delivery of design packages in line with project programme requirements.

  • Act as the project's technical lead and primary point of contact for design-related matters.

  • Review contract requirements and ensure all design activities comply with project obligations.

  • Manage and resolve technical queries and Requests for Information (RFIs).

  • Develop, maintain, and monitor design programmes and design deliverable schedules.

  • Produce regular reports on design progress, risks, issues, and mitigation actions.

  • Lead and chair design review meetings with internal teams, clients, consultants, and external stakeholders.

  • Review design deliverables to ensure quality, compliance, and suitability for construction.

  • Manage design interfaces and coordination between project stakeholders.

  • Ensure compliance with project design approval processes and governance procedures.

  • Implement and manage change control processes relating to design.

  • Support procurement and engagement of designers, consultants, suppliers, and subcontractors.

  • Manage document control processes and ensure design information is issued correctly.

  • Lead design reviews with approval and acceptance bodies.

  • Support project assurance, quality, safety, and compliance requirements.

  • Liaise with Principal Designers and other statutory stakeholders as required.

  • Support the recruitment, mentoring, and development of engineering staff.

  • Promote technical excellence and continuous improvement across project teams.

The Candidate

  • Degree qualified in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related discipline.

  • Significant experience in Design Management within major infrastructure, civil engineering, energy, transportation, or complex construction projects.

  • Minimum 5 years' industry experience.

  • Strong understanding of construction methodologies, design processes, and project delivery.

  • Experience managing external consultants and multidisciplinary design teams.

  • Proven ability to maintain programme, quality, and budget performance.

  • Strong stakeholder management skills with experience working directly with clients and approval authorities.

  • Excellent technical, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to challenge technical solutions and drive effective outcomes.

  • Knowledge of Principal Designer duties and design compliance requirements.

  • Experience within large-scale infrastructure, hydro, energy, rail, or similarly complex projects would be highly advantageous.

  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) status desirable.

  • Contractor and consultancy design experience desirable.
